MIDAM MUSHROOMS / WOODVILLE, OHIO

Frequently Asked Questions

Which type of mushroom is easiest to grow?

Oyster mushrooms are generally considered one of the easiest types of mushrooms to grow, especially for beginners. They thrive on a variety of growing conditions. Lion’s mane are a little more finicky, but is also a good choice for beginners.

Are MidAm Mushroom blocks organic?

We are not currently certified organic, but MidAm Mushroom blocks are made with certified organic materials (sawdust, soy hulls, rye grain).

Should I take the substrate block out of the bag?

It's usually recommended to keep the substrate block inside the bag until the mushrooms are fully grown. Opening the bag prematurely could expose the block to contaminants and dry out the block.

How long can I wait to use my mushroom block?

Mushroom blocks can typically be stored in a dark, cool area for a couple weeks. This shelf life can be extended by storing your block in the fridge for up to 6 months.

Why does my block have white mold-like substance all over it?

The white mold-like substance is likely mycelium, the vegetative part of the fungus. This is a normal and essential part of the mushroom growing process, indicating that the substrate is colonized and ready to produce mushrooms.

What should I do with my mushroom block once it's done growing?

How many times can I use my block?

Mushroom blocks can sometimes produce multiple flushes of mushrooms, depending on the type of mushroom and growing conditions. After each flush, you can try to encourage more growth by soaking the block in water again. Lion’s mane will continue to grow up from the same spot several times.

How do I know when my mushrooms are ready to harvest?

Mushrooms are typically ready to harvest when the caps have fully opened and the veil underneath the cap has broken. For best flavor and texture, harvest them before the caps flatten out completely. Lion’s mane are ready when the spines are 1/4” long. Visit our instruction pages for more details and photos.

Why are my oyster mushrooms growing tall and skinny?

This is due to not enough fresh air flow. Be sure to remove the humidity dome as the mushrooms begin to grow.

Why did my Lion's Mane stop growing?

Lion’s mane will sometimes stall when conditions change during their growth. This can be drying out, too high of temperature, not enough fresh air. If you see no new growth for 3 days, pick the mushroom and replace the dome for a fresh cluster to grow out of the same spot on the block.
